South Africa's Wine Moment: Chenin Blanc Leads a Cape Winelands on the Rise
South African wine is having a banner year, with Chenin Blanc collecting more than 60 medals and a Stellenbosch Chenin named Best in Show at the 2026 Decanter World Wine Awards. Stellenbosch, Franschhoek and Constantia anchor a thriving Cape Winelands.
South Africa's wines have spent years quietly earning respect, and in 2026 that recognition is turning into a chorus. From international competitions to the vineyards of the Cape Winelands, the country's producers are collecting medals and drawing visitors in equal measure.
Chenin Blanc leads the charge
One grape has come to define the moment. Chenin Blanc, long a workhorse variety in South Africa, has emerged as a signature style, collecting more than 60 medals across recent judging and cementing its place at the very front of the country's wines.
The top scores tell the story. The Spier Wines 21 Gables Chenin Blanc 2024 was awarded 96 points and a gold medal, a mark that places it among the most highly rated white wines the country has ever produced.
Top honours on the world stage
The recognition has reached the most prestigious competitions of all. At the 2026 Decanter World Wine Awards, South Africa's Best in Show went to the Stellenbosch Reserve Hangbrug Chenin Blanc 2025, a standout on a fiercely competitive global stage.
Domestic judging pointed the very same way. At the country's 2026 Investec Trophy Wine Show, the top-rated wines included a Chenin from the Cederberg and a Cabernet from Delaire Graff in the Banghoek area of Stellenbosch.
Red wines held their own too. Cabernet Sauvignon emerged as one of the strongest categories in the judging, earning seven gold medals, most of them awarded to wines from the Stellenbosch region itself.
Stellenbosch at the heart of it all
Behind the awards sits a region built for wine. Stellenbosch, in the heart of the Cape Winelands, has become the country's most celebrated wine destination, wrapping its vineyards in dramatic mountain landscapes and old oak lined streets.
Its cellars are known for range as much as for quality. The area's wineries have earned their reputation on Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinotage and Chenin Blanc, a trio that shows off both the international and the distinctly South African sides of the trade.
A landscape of estates and experiences
The wine country stretches well beyond a single town. Excellence flows through the historic estates of the Constantia Valley, the renowned vineyards of Stellenbosch and the farms of Franschhoek, each with its own distinct character and pull.
For visitors, the experience has been packaged with real care. Franschhoek's Wine Tram, which carries guests between estates, has become one of the most popular ways to tour the region without ever having to worry about driving.
Celebrating a milestone
The region also marked a landmark this year. Wine Town Stellenbosch ran from 25 July to 2 August, nine days of wine, food and lifestyle events that celebrated 55 years of the Stellenbosch Wine Routes.
That anniversary carried real weight. Half a century of organised wine tourism helped turn a cluster of farms into a world class destination, and the festival underlined just how far the region has travelled since.
Wine as a window on the country
Taken together, the medals and the milestones point to a country hitting its stride. South African wine now offers both the substance to win over critics and the setting to draw travellers, turning a glass of Chenin or Cabernet into an invitation to visit the Cape itself.
