South Africa's Big Year: Cape Town Sweeps Global Travel Awards as Its Lodges Top the World

South Africa is having a landmark year on the world travel stage. From Cape Town's mountain and city honours to its safari lodges topping global rankings, the country has collected a string of accolades in 2026 that very few destinations can match.

Cape Town, the world's mountain city

One of the most eye catching wins came for Cape Town's most famous backdrop. The city was named the world's leading mountain destination for 2026, an unusual title for a coastal city that is far better known for its beaches and its harbour.

The company it beat says a great deal. Cape Town edged out celebrated mountain retreats such as Chamonix in France, Zakopane in Poland and Bergen in Norway, a reminder that Table Mountain draws visitors on a scale that rivals the Alps.

A crown for an inclusive city

The recognition did not stop at the mountains. Cape Town was also crowned the world's Best LGBTQ+ City Destination at the 2026 Spartacus Travel Awards, held alongside the ITB Berlin travel fair in Germany back in March.

That honour reflects a reputation built over many years. Cape Town has long marketed itself as one of the most welcoming and diverse cities on the continent, and the award cements its standing as a global destination for LGBTQ+ travellers.

South African hotels top the rankings

The country's hotels and lodges have matched the cities for glory. South African properties have led major global rankings this year, turning the spotlight onto the standard of hospitality found across the country's cities and its wilderness.

In the cities, the Cape Cadogan Boutique Hotel took top honours as the number one city hotel in Africa and ranked 35th in the world, a strong showing for an intimate property competing in a fiercely crowded field.

The safari side was even more striking. Lion Sands Game Reserve, set along the Sabie River bordering the Kruger National Park, was named the number one safari lodge in Africa and placed fourth among the world's best hotels overall.

Kruger bounces back

The Kruger National Park itself has its own comeback story. After severe flooding earlier in 2026, the vast reserve has recovered, with greener landscapes and renewed scenery drawing visitors back to one of Africa's premier wildlife destinations.

The recovery has, in its own way, improved the experience. Fewer crowds and lush post flood conditions have created standout safari viewing, as improved visibility and fresh growth bring animals into clearer view right across the park.

A home for remote workers

Beyond the awards, South Africa has been courting a newer kind of visitor. Since launching its digital nomad visa in 2024, the country has positioned itself as a base for remote workers looking for something far longer than a short holiday.

The terms are generous by global standards. The visa allows remote workers to live in South Africa for up to a year, with the option to renew for up to three, an offer that pairs naturally with Cape Town's scenery and relatively affordable cost of living.

Momentum worth keeping

Taken together, the accolades paint a picture of a country punching above its weight in global travel. The challenge now is to convert the trophies and the headlines into sustained arrivals, spreading the benefits from the award winning lodges to the wider economy.
